This week’s #MondayMotivation comes from the poet and essayist Mandy Shunnarah’s collection of interviews ‘Talking Writing: Four Conversations to Becoming a Better Writer’.

How do you weave emotion and fact together into your personal essays? How do you draw a line from the specific to the universal? What larger lessons have you gleaned from writing your life story/stories?

Mandy Shunnarah (they/them) is an Alabama-born, Palestinian-American writer who now calls Columbus, Ohio home. Their essays, poetry, and short stories have been published in the New York Times, The Rumpus, Electric Literature and more. Their first book, Midwest Shreds: Skaters and Skateparks in Middle America, will be out from Belt Publishing in the fall.

May Mandy’s words inspire your own writing practice this week.

This week’s #MondayMotivation comes from the Fre This week’s #MondayMotivation comes from the French-born American writer, Anaïs Nin.

Do you feel that writing helps you to “taste life twice?” Or do you feel like writing offers a way to “taste” a life (or lives) that you have not lived?

Anaïs Nin was a diarist, essayist, novelist and writer of short stories and erotica. She journaled prolifically from age eleven until her death. Her journals, many of which were published during her lifetime, detailed her private thoughts and personal relationships. Nin also wrote several novels, and much of her work, including the collections of erotica ‘Delta of Venus’ and ‘Little Birds’ were published posthumously amid renewed critical interest in her life and work.

This week’s #MondayMotivation comes from musicia This week’s #MondayMotivation comes from musician and writer, Patti Smith.

In your writing practice, do you sometimes allow yourself to ramble about “nothing?” Do you have a clear idea of where your writing is going before you start? Do you let the writing generate more ideas? A bit of both?

Patti Smith is an American singer, songwriter, poet, painter, and author who rose to prominence in the New York punk rock movement with her 1975 album, “Horses.” She is often called the “punk poet laureate” for her effortless fusing of rock and poetry in her work. In 2010, she won the National Book Award for her memoir, “Just Kids.” She is also the author of the books “M Train”, “The Coral Sea”, “The Year of the Monkey” and more.

We hope that Patti’s words inspire your own writing this week.

How do you approach writing “villains” in your work? Do you struggle to relate to them or write them in a realistic, textured way? Or do they come naturally to you? How do you recognize a good villain in the stories that you read?

George R. R. Martin became an icon of today’s Science Fiction & Fantasy genre with his Song of Fire and Ice series but has been a prolific writer for much longer. He’s written many novels, short story collections, craft essays, speeches and even a few episodes of “The Twilight Zone.”

For our creative nonfiction writers out there: how do you fit your personal experience into a strong, cohesive narrative? How do you reckon the messiness of life with the structure that books or essays demand?

Quinta Brunson recently made history as the first Black woman to be nominated for three Emmys in Comedy for her TV show Abbot Elementary. She is also the author of the book ‘She Memes Well’ and has created and acted in content for BuzzFeed Video and A Black Lady Sketch Show (HBO). Born in Alabama, Taylor studied chemistry at Auburn and then biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he was on his way to a doctorate before shifting to pursue an MFA at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. He is the author of the novel ‘Real Life’ and the short story collection ‘Filthy Animals’, and his work has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies including Guernica, LitHub, and The New Yorker.
