We often turn to writers to glean wisdom about the world. J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye has been a kind of bible to many troubled teens, as Margaret Mitchell’s Gone With the Wind has been to women struggling to be strong, or Joan Didion’s The Year of Magical Thinking has been to people suffering grief.

Announcing the Gotham Blog

If you’re reading this, you probably know that Gotham is continually handing out pearls of lustrous information for writers like you. Not to the cheap “content” everyone else is shoving in your face.

Well, Gotham has a blog now, where we’ll be posting much of this information.

Surviving a First Draft

Based on completely unscientific evidence, I would say the downfall of most writers (let’s say 88 percent) is getting through a first draft. They jump ship; they just can’t make it.

Those writers (perhaps 12 percent) that manage to finish a first draft have a much better chance (let’s say 77 percent) of making it through at least two more drafts and sending their work on its way into the world. Continue reading “Surviving a First Draft”
